We take sustainability seriously

We aim to lead the way (no pun intended) with sustainability. It’s vital to us, and our mission here at Team Midland Lead. All of our lead is 100% recyclable from trusted sources. We take great pride in producing an environmentally sustainable product which outlasts other man-made alternatives, and can be reused again and again.

Passionate about reducing our carbon footprint

Team Midland Lead is passionate about reducing our carbon footprint and we work with sustainability and manufacturing experts (including Toyota and TMUK) to collaborate on our goals.

We’re balancing short-term investment proposals to reduce electricity usage, with long-term strategies to use only clean energy on-site.  We’re accountable for the impact we have on our environment, and provide annual ESG reports including our scope 3 carbon footprint.

Background

“Midland Lead has a clear vision to reduce their carbon footprint... Since installing the solar panels and replacing some of their forklift truck fleet with electric vehicles, the impact has been significant and is a pathway to making further reductions in using greener energy throughout the business..”

We urge UK construction to choose greener materials

We know we’re part of an industry that has specific sustainability challenges, and we’re lobbying for change. Growing pressure on the construction industry to meet development targets is resulting in some concerning practices.

A recent article published in Builders Merchant News reveals the shocking excess plastic waste produced by the UK construction industry – 15 times higher than other European countries. Midland Lead calls for construction companies in the UK to assess the environmental profile of the products they use and consider greener choices.

greenest building material

Why lead is the world’s greenest building material

Lead is one of the world’s most sustainable building materials—long-lasting, fully recyclable, and low in carbon impact. Here’s how it ticks all the right boxes for greener construction.

Recyclable
Sustainable
  • Lead is featured in the BRE Green Guide – which outlines the environmental impact of various building materials – as an A+ or A rated material

  • Our machine cast lead now also has a BRE Global Environmental Product Declaration

Low Carbon Footprint
  • Lead’s carbon footprint is between 30 and 76kg CO2 per kg of material –significantly lower than even copper, zinc or stainless steel

  • Lead has a relatively low melting point of 327°C which means we don’t have to expend huge amounts of energy recycling it. In fact, our machine casting process has a significantly lower environmental impact than production processes for other metals or synthetic materials

Longevity
  • Lead outlasts other man-made products. Even with little-to-no maintenance, you can expect lead sheeting to last decades.

  • Our machine cast lead has a 60-year guarantee, and rolled lead sheet has a 50 year guarantee

Recyclable
  • It’s as close to being a 100% recyclable material as you can get. Lead can be re-used – not just once, but over and over again, with no impact on its quality

  • Eco points describe the impact of a material on the building’s overall environmental performance.  Lead generates between just 0.5 and 0.66 Eco points – meaning minimal environmental impact.

Greener Grounds

Collaborating with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust

We’re working with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust on a nature recovery plan for our site — exploring how we can protect and restore local biodiversity right on our doorstep. From planting pollinator-friendly species to enhancing habitats, it’s all part of our wider commitment to sustainability, not just in the materials we use but in the land we use too.

Background

“For the good of the environment, as well as your own back pocket, you want to design something that lasts and is good quality, whether traditional or contemporary in style… All the people I've previously worked with recommend Midland Lead's lead sheet.”

Sustainability

Lead forms an important part of the circular economy and is the most sustainable product that can be used in construction, producing zero waste. More than 95% of scrap lead is collected and recycled in the UK, compared to a recovery rate of <10% for other non-lead alternatives. Sourcing 100% recycled lead will help you and your customers meet your corporate social responsibility and environmental targets. And best of all, you won’t have to pay a premium for it.
The manufacturing process of recycled lead manufacturing uses just 35% to 40% of the energy required to provide original lead from ore. Unlike many other materials, lead can be re-melted and recycled forever with no loss of quality.
Great questions! This is the three-step process we follow at Midland Lead:
1. First, we use a good lead scrap supplier. All of the lead we use comes from trusted, approved suppliers.
2. We check the quality of all the recyclable lead we receive. Quite simply, if it’s not good enough, we won’t use it.
3. We check our lead at every stage of the production process to ensure it conforms to the right chemical composition and the right code thickness.
It doesn’t! Recycled lead is the same quality as primary lead, and can be reused without limits. In fact more lead is produced today through recycling than mining.
Here’s a good example: Midland Lead is often trusted to work on important heritage projects. Sometimes we’re asked to recycle the existing lead sheet from a church roof so that it can be re-used. As part of the recycling process, we may skim off a few additional impurities, but we don’t add anything. So the customer gets back the same lead – just in a new, purer form.
IPPC permit
Midland Lead works hard to ensure we meet the requirements of the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) permit, regulated by the UK Environment Agency. That means every aspect of our business that could have an impact on the environment is regularly checked and monitored. We are also required to demonstrate what steps we take to reduce our energy use, minimise waste production – and minimise emissions to air, land and water.
ISO 14001
In June 2006, after 18 months of hard work, Midland Lead was awarded an Environmental Management System (certificate EMS 505964) to show that we comply with ISO 14001: 2004 standards. It gives us something that very few lead sheet producers have: ISO certification covering the entire manufacturing process.
We are also the only independent manufacturer offering BBA-certified machine cast lead sheet with an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
